what i hope they’re actually trying to communicate is that the trade-offs and complexity can be worth it.

what i want to say is that linux (broadly) is imperfect and infuriating, but also far more free, in very material ways, than anything from a corporate os or platform. it is learnable, and in learning you make the tool you already physically own into something more wholly your own. you will understand it, keep it running, and be able focus on doing the things you actually want to do with it. not as an appliance, but as a tool that you shape into something that meets your needs, not the needs of the corporate owners or the millions of eulas and terms we’ve all agreed to.

your computer can actually work for you, in a way you like, setup for the things it can help you do in your life.

it is not utopian, it has a lot of deep problems in every direction. you will be angry at it. but aren’t you already angry? so far i prefer the trade offs and frustrations of the broad linux world over the more or less helpless rage i feel for apple/ms/google.

here in Santa Fe, we are lucky to have almost half of our product as local. but even in a "best case scenario" i would say all the capacity on that local product greatly reduced by their own supply chain dependence

so if the big box stores (except maybe whole foods? i shudder to think what that might become) disappear and the co op can only supply at best a quarter of what it does now and at insane prices, pretty much everybody will have to cooperate on food production and ecological support work to survive

I mean look at that hat! Coming back with a bag full of carrots and parsnips and other things you've never even heard of. Where are they off to, what's the potted plant for, is it food? Is it a pretty centerfold? It could be sentient, it wouldn't be the last cactus to board a train and head someplace.

• my laptop is also 15 years old and still functions as a daily driver
• but incidentally i have been daily driving my reMarkable tablet more than my laptop - no color, no network, and purely document based interface for drawing, reading, and writing and it has been feeling gooood. i did buy it new last year (subsidized by work) but the screen has some scratches and cracks already so combined with the other limitations it definitely has the old computer challenge vibes
