I am a software and systems generalist, having built and worked on all sorts of systems in different types of environments from education to small business to enterprise. I have lots (6 years) of professional experience in .NET, javascript frameworks, TSQL, mongodb, docker, cloud native stuff, etc, and personally I build a lot of stuff in go, C, shell, and vanilla JS, and I have over 15 years experience as a Linux and BSD sysadmin. I can learn new stuff pretty easily especially when I'm hands on!

I'm looking for part time or full time contract work in any kind of #softwareEngineering, #devOps, or #softwareDesign role that is demonstrably not pure evil. Particular areas of interest are resilient distributed systems; accessible, friendly and low footprint user interfaces; and internal tooling/infra/DX. Working on stuff that actually matters like alternative power, food systems, or comms, or anything arts-adjacent would be ideal.

I prefer remote work but am open to relocation.

i had the additional observation that as someone who had a meteoric rise in my career, transitioned, and then went into poverty while the world falls apart around me, i have a very different relationship to risk, truth, and fulfillment than most, and for example working at the co op i see people of all ages just accepting the oppression of these low wages and gruelling hours while management gets a living wage and plenty of time off and nobody even THINKS to hold the board accountable- i suggested a strike one time and they thought i was joking...

what i hope they’re actually trying to communicate is that the trade-offs and complexity can be worth it.

what i want to say is that linux (broadly) is imperfect and infuriating, but also far more free, in very material ways, than anything from a corporate os or platform. it is learnable, and in learning you make the tool you already physically own into something more wholly your own. you will understand it, keep it running, and be able focus on doing the things you actually want to do with it. not as an appliance, but as a tool that you shape into something that meets your needs, not the needs of the corporate owners or the millions of eulas and terms we’ve all agreed to.

your computer can actually work for you, in a way you like, setup for the things it can help you do in your life.

it is not utopian, it has a lot of deep problems in every direction. you will be angry at it. but aren’t you already angry? so far i prefer the trade offs and frustrations of the broad linux world over the more or less helpless rage i feel for apple/ms/google.
